Taktsang Monastery:Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan

Taktsang Dzong or Paro also known as Taktsang Monastery or The Tiger's Nest, is a well-known Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma It is located in the cliffside of the upper Paro valley, Bhutan. It was built in 1692, around the Taktsang Senge Samdup (stag tshang seng ge bsam grub) cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three months in the 8th century. Padmasambhava is qualified with introducing Buddhism to Bhutan and is the tutelary deity of the country.

Paro Taktsang would loosely translate in English as Tiger’s Nest in Paro. Entry to Bhutan is very limited. Independent tourism is not permitted, so the only way in is by purchasing organized tours from authorised tour operators upon which you will be allowed to purchase Bhutanese visa and an air ticket through the only carrier that flies to Bhutan – Drukair.
